The Meaning Of Your Moon Sign

In astrology, its said that we live through our sun sign and feel through our moon sign. Your sun sign (or zodiac sign) represents your outward personality, how you express yourself onto the world.  Your moon is your internal or emotional personality, it influences how you express your emotions and what you seek to receive for emotional fulfillment.  Our emotions are a strong motivator for many actions and choices that we decide to make; consciously and subconsciously. We spend most of our days living through our moon sign.

The moons energy is subconscious and responsive. It represents the things we do without thinking, how we instinctively act or react based on previous encounters and subconscious memory. Tapping into the energy of your moon sign brings a more conscious understanding of what your subconscious mind is guiding you to do to achieve happiness, comfort, and security. Understanding your moon sign improves self-love, relationships, and increases self-trusts (intuition).

Moving with the Moon

The moon moves fast, switching zodiac signs every 2.5 days. The daily placement of the moon has a strong influence on how we feel and act. That’s why you can be in a hardworking, deeply focused mood one day and then just want to hang-out and have fun a couple of days later. The moon has a 28 day cycle which is made up of 8 phases. Every time the moon moves into a different zodiac sign or shifts into a new phase it influences our mood and energy.  When you are aligned with the moon its easier to follow your natural impulses to get your needs met and to manifest. You instinctively or intuitively understand the best times for you to take certain actions such as periods of rest, diet changes, fertility, planning/analyzing, and taking action.

 Your Moon Sign

To find out your moon sign, you will need to look at your natal chart. Because the moon shifts every 2.5 days you really only need your day of birth; however, having the time adds another layer of accuracy (encase you were born on the day when the moon was shifting from one sign into the next).  When the moon moves into a specific zodiac sign it takes on the qualities and characteristics of that sign. The characteristics of that zodiac becomes your emotional personality and dictates your needs for emotional satisfaction, comfort, and nurturing.

Moon in Water Signs

The moon in a water sign is a natural fit. The essence of the moon is receptive, reflective, and emotional just like water signs. People with a water moon are deeply emotional, relationship oriented, sensitive, nurturing, and highly intuitive. If your moon is in a water sign the key to emotional fulfillment and security includes having strong attachments with another – friends, family, a lover.

Cancer Moon – The moon rules the zodiac sign Cancer; therefore, a Cancer moon reflects all of the qualities of the moon to the fullest.  The emotional goals of a Cancer moon person is to feel secure, safe, and taken care of. They also have a strong desire to give these things back to others in return. People with a moon in Cancer are natural nurtures, after all Cancer is the sign of the mother. Cancer moon people will take care of you, feed you, love on you, and make you feel as comfortable as possible. Making others feel cared for brings them emotional satisfaction; however,  Cancer moons must guard against being smothering. If a Cancer moon doesn’t feel needed or doesn’t have anyone to take care of they can sometimes feel useless. Cancer moon people are extremely intuitive and can judge the character of people and their motives very well. The downside of a moon in Cancer is moodiness, insecurity, and shutting down (or going inside their shell).  The moon by its sheer nature is changeable and Cancer moon people inherit this quality; it can be hard to keep up with a Cancer moon’s mood swings especially because they are so sensitive. When their feeling are hurt they may lash out in a dramatic display or withdrawn into their personal space with their favorite food, drink, blanket and Netflix until they are ready to deal with the world again.

Scorpio Moon –  Scorpio is not an easy sign for the moon to navigate. Although Scorpio is emotional, sensitive, and relationship oriented like all other water signs; it can also be dominating, repressive, and swings between coldness and intensity. A person with a moon in Scorpio seeks security through deep emotional bonding with another person. A Scorpio moon wants a bond so deep and discussion isn’t even necessary; they expect the other person to intuitively know and understand their desires, how to make them happy, and the inner workings of their mind. If this sounds intense its because it is. A person with a moon in Scorpio definitely has an intense emotional vibe, especially if they have a connection with you or wants one. While these people can be demanding, hard to read, and even reclusive when they need to recharge they are also loyal, generous, and thoughtful. Moon in Scorpio people don’t like to be vulnerable, they fear rejection but once the outer shell is cracked the inside if full of sweet goodness.

Pisces Moon – Pisces moon people are true unicorns, they are open, outgoing, crave attention, and love to love. Maybe a bit shy at first, they quickly open up because they seek to give love, support, and understanding as much as they crave to receive it from others. The need for emotional connection gives Pisces moon people an accommodating, flexible, emotional demeanor; however, they expect for others to do the same for them in return – accept them for who they are and do whatever it takes to make sure they are happy. Creating and respecting boundaries as well as feeling comfortable alone or without a partner are difficult yet necessary lessons for Pisces moon people. If you have a Pisces moon person in your life, respect their need to escapism reality from time to time. The mundane and harsh reality of daily life can be a bit much for these sensitive souls and they need time alone to recharge and convene with their spiritual nature. At best this escapism is being home alone, taking a bath, or getting a pedicure, at its worst alcohol, drugs, and pretending that meaningless sex is emotionally fulfilling. Extremely romantic and creative by nature, healthy ways for Pisces moon people to express their feelings are through art, dance, poetry, or writing.

Moon in Earth Signs

The moon is a bit challenged in earth signs with the exception of Taurus. Earth signs possess the quality of tangibility, when the moon is in Earth things have to feel real for the person to be emotionally fulfilled. Earth moon people need a sense of security and grounding to feel safe and secure. Financial security, structure, and organization make earth moons feel at peace. Consequently, sudden change, not having control, and risky behavior make earth moon people feel threatened. Providing and being provided for is the goal for people with a moon in earth. While these qualities produce stability and growth they can also restrict the flow of emotions because earth moon people are often looking for a return on their emotional investment and physical validation of feelings.

Taurus Moon – The moon in Taurus is at its highest form of dignity, called exultation. This means that the moon in Taurus is equally or maybe even more powerful in this zodiac sign than it is in Cancer, it’s place of rulership. The moon embodies divine feminine energy and Taurus embodies the nurturing quality of earth. Combined these energies and you get Mother Nature – the energy of mothering, stability, support, and nurturing is what makes the moon in Taurus so strong. Taurus moon people need material and financial stability, dependable relationships, and their senses stimulated to feel secure and emotionally happy. Their physical senses, touch, taste, and smell, are equally as strong as their intuitive sense. Taurus moon people are able to judge people and situations quickly and accurately. Stubborn, over-indulging, and shifting between lazy and hardworking are some difficult traits of Taurus moon people. Taurus moon people love the good life, they are willing to work hard to get what they want and fully indulge in the fruits of their labor. Eating, shopping, drinking, high quality products, and massages are some of moon in Taurus’ favorite things. When it comes to dealing with a Taurus moon you have to remember they do what they want, when they want (the moody quality of the moon) because that’s what makes them feel good.

Virgo Moon – Virgo moon people are thoughtful and are looking to serve. They find comfort and security in being able to experience the positive results of their work and efforts.  The perfecting quality of Virgo zodiac sign is very evident in Virgo moon people. Their emotions have a logical feel. Virgo moon people are often analyzing, contemplating, and  scrutinizing their feelings. Emotional expression can sometimes feel like an if, then statement – “If I do this, then should the result”. Unfortunately, emotions aren’t linear and definitely aren’t logical. While this cool, calm, and analytical approach may work for Virgo moon people internally it often leads to a struggle when they try to apply it to other people. The good thing is that Virgo moon people want others to be happy, healthy, and productive and will take the initiate to make sure those things happen. Being able to take charge and the create a structure that maintains productivity and happiness brings Virgo moon happiness.  This may sound like a lot of work (it is). To satisfy a Virgo moon person make them feel like they don’t always have to be responsible for everything. Being able to trust that someone else can handle things and they can relax a bit will satisfy these serious folks. A good balance between logic and intuition make Virgo moon people emotionally savvy; however, too much logic and not enough emotion can make Virgo moon come across as cold.

Capricorn Moon – The moon in Capricorn is in its weakest position, known as detriment. In Capricorn the moon’s natural free flow of emotions is restricted as Capricorn demands emotional maturity, responsibility, and less emoting. Capricorn moon people find comfort in accomplishments, recognition, being financially stability, and being able to provide for their loved ones. When out of balance emotionally their cravings for responsibility and financial security can morph into greed, controlling and even addictive behavior. Upholding duty and responsibility are more gratifying to Capricorn moon people who emotional displays and PDA. If you want to win over a Capricorn moon, share your long-term plans for the future including how you plan to build wealth and legacy for generations to come over a nice meal and a good libation. When it comes to emotions, Capricorn moon people see black and white, they are direct and will always let you know where you stand and how well you are or aren’t meeting their expectations.  While they understand people have emotions, they see no purpose in behaving emotionally; often, they are the strong silent type. This sounds emotionally stiff, in reality Capricorn moon people are serious about making taking care of business, they are natural providers. Being able to provide is what brings Capricorn moons emotional happiness and therefore they also need to be provided for. But don’t get it confused, moon in Capricorn people work hard and play even harder!

Moon in Fire Signs

A fire moon has a self-focused, self-gratifying emotional expression. Their needs, their feelings, and their cravings are always top-priority and is evident in their actions. Fire’s innate tendency for self-gratification restricts the moons natural expression to nurture and consider the feelings of others. On the other hand, fire signs are extremely passionate. Passion and emotion stem from the same place; passion is intense, assertive, and dramatic all of which are characteristics of fire moon people.

Aries Moon – Aries is the first sign of the zodiac and resonates with youth and immaturity. Ruled by the planet Mars, Aries energy is aggressive, direct, and reactionary. When you combine these qualities with the moody, emotional qualities of the moon you get someone who is ruled by their emotional impulses. Moon in Aries people tend to be impulsive, reactionary, and always doing what makes them feel good with little concern for others. Being able to get what they want, when they want it, is what makes Aries moon people feel comfortable and in control. When it comes to expressing their feelings they are direct, “this is how I feel right now and I’m going to tell you, right now”; this directness can feel aggressive to others and lead to disagreements and arguments. The good things is that Aries people don’t hold on to things, once its out they can move past it; maybe the other person can’t but they can. The energy of passion equates to strong creative tendencies and a desire to start something new; however, a lack of discipline often leads to unfinished projects and broken commitments; when Aries moon people lose interest, they move on to something or someone else that will light their fire.

Leo Moon – These people are warm, generous, thoughtful, and need relationship. This combination of characteristics works well for Leo moon people, it makes achieving their emotional goal of being recognized and adored by others easy. To be admired, one must be liked, to be liked one must be either serve a benefit or be very outgoing, this rational becomes Leo moon’s strategy to gain as many friends and admirers as possible. At their best Leo moon people are optimistic, confident, fun, and always finding the positives in a situation. When feeling unappreciated or unrecognized Leo moons can become dramatic, combative, depressed and emotionally manipulative these are ways to get attention and gain sympathy from others. Once the attention is back on them their spirits are lifted and they return to their more pleasant selves. Leo moon people can be stubborn and feel like they always know whats best this can lead to disagreements with people but because Leo moon people need to be liked, they don’t hold grudges and will find a way to get back into good graces.

Sagittarius Moon – The self-focused energy of fire gives Sagittarius moon people a bit of detachment when it comes to feelings. If a Sag moon isn’t focused on themselves than they are focused on the big picture, meaning it’s either about them or something bigger then them. To feel emotionally happy and secure, Sagittarius moon needs freedom. Fun, excitement, travel, learning, and experiencing life makes Sagittarius moon people happy. Fun, excitement, and travel embody the energy of escapism which is how a Sagittarius moon deals with things when emotionally out of balanced. Running away, hoping a flight, disappearing in general, drugs, and alcohol are comforting escapism for Saggi moon people.  The idea of having to be accountable for others or change their ways to make someone else happy is emotionally off-putting as are dwelling in the past, self-sacrifice, and feeling any kind of restriction. The fire of Sagittarius is direct and to the point just like their emotional expression. A Sagittarius moon knows what they want, tells it likes it is, won’t bite their tongue, and are motivated into taking action to get their needs met.

Moon in Air Signs

Air signs’ dominate traits are thought and logic. When you apply logic to emotions they emotion can be less authentic vs. if it was allowed to naturally flow. For this reason, air signs are not easy for the moon to navigate. The moon prefers deep connection and honest expression with little limitations. Air signs like to float along the surface, not going too deep. A strong propensity towards pleasant interactions and motivates them to hold back their true feelings in order to keep up a happy appearance. For air signs, feelings are experienced logically and are often seen as a concept or idea versus pure emotion which we equate with feelings. Air moon people are most satisfied when they feel balanced, are in the know, and are able to relate to others. This is achieved through analysis and logic versus following their emotional impulses.

Gemini Moon – The moon in Gemini embodies the energy of duality. There is a constant need to be able to explore and understand different perspectives especially on the emotional plane. The moon in Gemini will take in just enough to feel as if they know or experienced a feeling and then moves on to exploring a different perspective. Constantly experiencing different perspectives makes Gemini moon people changeable and come across as a bit moody.  These people embody the saying, “which ever way the wind blows”, one moment they can be all in and committed to something then a few hours later completely change their mind. While this creates confusion for others, Gemini moon people have no idea what the big deal is. Keeping things light and fun is about as deep as Gemini moon people care go, so if you need to have a deep, serious conversation a Gemini moon person may not be the person to go to; however, if you need a pick-me up or to see things from a different perspective, a Gemini moon is a perfect go to.  The mundane aspects or too much pressure can get to Gemini moon; they recharge by socializing, having a good debate, or pulling pranks to break-up the seriousness. Changability, flexibility, not being too intense, and having options is what makes Gemini moon people feel secure. They also need to be able to express their feelings. It’s common for a Gemini moon to speak before they think because they are talking through their feelings. Similarity, they may ramble when they feel nervous or anxious.

Libra Moon – Moon in Libra people are most concerned with maintaining balance and harmony within their feeling and in their relationships. Venus’ influence over Libra combined with the nurturing qualities of the moon creates a person who is very aware of the beauty of things and in people. Libra moon people require a high level of sophistication and aesthetic pleasure. They like to both create and experience pleasurable experiences such as fine food (especially sweets), stylish clothing, music, poetry, quality craftsmanship in everything, and of course beauty and skin care products. When it comes to expressing their emotions, Libra moon people will consider the other person as well as the different outcomes that will result from their different responses. This is an emotional strategy and Libra moon people use it to get to their end goal or maintain happiness.  However, Libra moon people can struggle with creating balance and often end up with the short end of the stick, always the one being flexible and accommodating. It is important for Libra moon people to understand that sharing their true feelings or having a difference of opinion doesn’t mean conflict. In order for Libra moons to receive what they want they have to help the other person understand their needs. This can only be accomplished by speaking their truth, standing up for themselves and setting boundaries.

Aquarius Moon – The moon in Aquarius wants to be there for others in theory but in practice their actions can be somewhat detached and self-focused. Aquarius energy resonates with high-minded ideas, humanitarianism, and is focused on the collective.  Group consciousness is innate for Aquarius moon people and they find emotional security in being connected to groups; this includes family, friendships, community groups, and business networks. However, their high-minded idealism doesn’t translate over so well when it comes to the emotional aspects of one-on-one interactions.  It’s easier for an Aquarius moon to spearhead lecture on having compassion for the fellow man than to walk-up to someone in the street who is behaving badly and show them compassion. Consequently, Aquarius moon people give off a level of detachment. They will go only so far when and then will pull back if the emotional response desired from someone infringes on their boundaries or exceeds what they feel is an appropriate amount of emotional involvement. There are levels to emotions when it comes to Aquarius moon people and only those that are close to them will experience the fullness of their emotions. Aquarius moon people also carry the energy of rebellion, unpredictability, and even volatility when it comes to their emotional expression. They can be very temperamental and even explosive.
