Mercury In Retrograde – What’s All The Fuss About?

I’m sure you have heard that when Mercury is in retrograde you should expect the worst because everything than can go wrong will.  So what’s really going on that this planet has to carry the blame for everything wrong in the world? The planet Mercury gets its name from the Greek god whose job was to deliver messages between the gods. Similarly, the planet Mercury governs the way we communicate with ourselves and others. The way we think, process information and relay it to the outside world. Quick and direct in nature, the planet oversees all methods of communication and travel.

What does it mean when the planet goes retrograde?

Mercury takes 88 days to complete an orbit around the sun, for three weeks every four months Mercury appears to orbit backwards (or goes retrograde). I say, “appears” to go retrograde because no planet ever really orbits backwards, it just looks that way from our viewpoint on earth.

When Mercury is retrograde communication and travel stalls, slows, and breakdown.  Anything that moves, has moving parts, is used to communicate, spread messages, and ideas will suffer. This also includes our mind, logic, and the way we speak. It’s hard to get on the same page with other people, mental fog is a real thing, and emails and letters seem to disappear from inboxes like magic.

Mercury in retrograde isn’t always problematic.

Mercury retrograde will most likely impact your travel plans such as train delays and flight cancellations. However, if you made travel plans prior to Mercury going retrograde to travel you are in a lucky position. If you are traveling back to a place from your past such as to visit family, to see an old friend, or to a place you used to live you are even luckier. Chances are the visit will be important to your Mercury Retrograde lesson. In these cases your travels will likely be pleasant or you will gain important insight from the past that will help you in the present.

So what does it all mean?

When Mercury is retrograde, it is not the time to begin. If you have anything in the works, try to finalize it before retrograde or wait till Mercury goes direct to sign on the dotted line. If you do make plans or finalize agreements during this time there is a good chance that once Mercury moves forward again your plans will unravel. Things you don’t want to start during retrograde include making important decisions, buying electronics or big ticket items, starting a new relationship, launching a business or product, or looking for and starting a new job. If any of these things were in process before retrograde then you are in a better position. There could be hiccups but the changes of survival are better.

Instead, Mercury retrograde is a time to do anything that starts with Re such as reconnect, revisit, evaluate, and review. Use the next 3 weeks to reconnect with the past and old friends. Tie up loose ends or travel back to places from your past; there maybe opportunities that you overlooked.

Do be prepared for hick-ups such as broken phones, computer problems, vehicles issues, missed messages, misunderstandings, and stalled negotiations. In short, when Mercury is in retrograde use the time to revisit your past instead of starting new things. Keep communications light, double check itineraries, leave early, back-up data, and keep an extra charger with you.
